Kelvin and I love to eat. And I guess you could say we like to cook…though I for one am not very adventurous.
This summer, we are making a commitment to take our culinary experiences to a new level by joining a CSA with one of my coworkers and her fiancé. I was introduced to CSAs a few years ago by a friend who spoke very highly of them. I googled what they were and needless to say I was confused when all the hits dealt with testing standards.
In fact, CSA stands for community shared agriculture. In a nutshell, this is a way for us to get really fresh veggies every week while supporting our local farmers and the food community. We decided to go with a local CSA called Root Radical based on nearby Howe Island. We had browsed a few other CSAs (we are lucky that there are plenty in Kingston) but found that we enjoyed the variety and the sentiment behind this one in particular.
Tonight, I went to the info session (Kelvin had to work) and I must say I am now even more excited for what this farm share will bring! I am looking forward to biking (maybe) to pickup every week and carting home an abundance of fresh vegetables. I want to make pesto with garlic scapes and learn to eat beets and kohlrabi. I will make soup when I get lazy…or Kelvin will.
I like to think of it as a healthy way to start our married life (first pickup is in June!) and I’m sure it will make summer even better. Stay posted – we will do our best to share about our inevitable home cooked adventures.
It’s a terrific way to begin your married life! There are a lot of resources online to help you use your share (which can be a bit stressful sometimes). Reach out if you need a hand.
Thanks Tammy! We are really excited. What has your experience with farm shares been like?
Terrific but you have to work at it. I have a ton of experience in using up fresh veggies, in getting others to eat them (my kids), in dealing with the onslaught of one particular thing (like eggplant or onions or okra) and how to forgive myself if I can’t do it.
Exciting!! I’ve wanted to join one for awhile, but haven’t really been in one place for too long. let me know how it works out for you guys and new recipes you try :)
